21369 - SEGREGATED URBAN SPACES AND HIV SOCIAL VULNERABILITY WITHIN CENTRAL-AMERICAN MEN MIGRANTS AND DISPLACED IN MEXICO/GUATEMALA BORDER

Apresentação/Introdução
During the last years, since the “war against drugs”, there has been an increase in local illicit substance use along the Mexico-Guatemala border. The area is also distinguished by international migration and displacement towards the United States, with an increase of irregular migrants’ deportations and violations of their human and sexual rights, making them particularly vulnerable to acquiring HIV


Objetivos
a) Social mapping of spaces of formal/informal sex work under the influence of non-injected drugs b) Practices and social representations about inconsistent condom use in these spaces configured by stigma and discrimination toward migrants and drug users


Metodologia
The research is qualitative and based on grounded theory, in the Mexico-Guatemala border cities of Tapachula, Ciudad Hidalgo, Tecun Uman and Quetzaltenango. We mapped spaces of social vulnerability to HIV and conducted 50 in-depth interviews with a targeted sample of men migrants and displaced from Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala, en route to the United States, who have commercial sex with men and/or women under the influence of non-injected drugs use, and stay temporary in these cities.


Resultados
Current migratory policies, in Mexico and United States, and drug use discrimination are social determinant in the migratory and displaced patterns, encouraging the generation of segregated spaces and HIV exposition through embodied social representations and praxis, on unequal negotiations of sexual work transactions, about non-condom and drug use.


Conclusões/Considerações
There is a need to increase understanding and improve local interventions about non stigma and discrimination in this migratory context. Which include a need to question the current migration policies toward this population produced by Mexico and United States and their local effects in terms of HIV exposure.
